Abdelaziz Bouteflika

Also known as: عبد العزيز بوتفليقة

Algerian president (1937–2021), reportedly born in Oujda, in office from 1999 to 2019.

President from 1999 to 2019, Abdelaziz Bouteflika presided over Algeria’s gradual exit from civil conflict, with reconciliation policies criticised by human rights organisations. His rule also drew electoral fraud allegations, criticism over curbs on civil liberties and opposition to the removal of presidential term limits. An audit-court decision personally concerned him in 1983, whereas later convictions of relatives must not be attributed to him. The Hirak protests forced his resignation in April 2019.
