1969–2009: Drowning death, misadventure verdict and subsequent police review of murder allegations

No legal proceedings

Jones was found dead in his swimming pool in July 1969. The coroner's inquest returned a verdict of death by misadventure while he was under the influence of alcohol and drugs. Murder theories persisted; in 2009, Sussex police reviewed new documents, but no official murder finding superseded the historic verdict.

1968–1969

1968–1969: Marginalisation and departure from Rolling Stones amid addiction, absences and visa problems

No legal proceedings

Jones's participation in Rolling Stones recording sessions and activities deteriorated sharply because of alcohol and drug problems, his health and legal difficulties. His drug convictions particularly complicated the prospect of obtaining a US work visa. He left the band in June 1969, officially by mutual consent.

1960s: Photograph in Nazi uniform with swastika armband

A photograph of Jones wearing a Nazi uniform with a swastika armband is documented and has been republished in recent studies of his life, fuelling criticism of provocation and the trivialisation of Nazi imagery in certain parts of the 1960s counterculture.
