The Warsaw court sentenced Koch to death in 1959 for planning, preparing and organising mass murders of Polish and Jewish civilians. The sentence was never carried out, partly because of his health; he died in prison in 1986.

  1. été 1944–January 1945

1944–1945: belated opposition to East Prussian evacuation despite Soviet advance

For months, Koch opposed early evacuation of East Prussia's population, to avoid undermining the rhetoric of resistance to the end. When evacuation became inevitable, it took place chaotically under pressure from the Soviet offensive.
