01

1987–2026

1987–2026: analysis of over 100 publications and enduring debate over co-authors, peer review and exact retraction count

No legal proceedings

Stewart and Feder estimated that much of the data underlying more than 100 papers co-authored by Darsee and 47 Harvard and Emory researchers had been fabricated, making the case foundational in debates about oversight and scientific integrity.

1982–February 1983

1982–1983: NIH investigation finds extensive pattern of fabrication in Harvard research

Investigation

An NIH committee found a pattern of data fabrication in Darsee's research at Harvard's cardiac laboratory, extending beyond the initial incident. Some data purportedly supporting major studies either did not exist or were inconsistent.

February 1983

February 1983: NIH recommends ten-year federal funding ban and seeks recovery of funds

Civil / administrative proceedings

Following its investigation, the NIH recommended that Darsee be excluded from federal research funding for ten years. The government also sought repayment of funds related to a study rendered unusable and increased oversight of the laboratory.

May–June 1983

1983: Emory investigation uncovers fabrication, unauthorised co-authors and fictitious collaborators

Investigation

The Emory review, covering research Darsee had conducted before Harvard, uncovered data fabrication, unauthorised use of co-authors' names and fictitious collaborators. An internal review invalidated most of his research carried out there.

June 1983

1983: Emory clinical papers retracted after patients, samples and collaborators cannot be verified

No legal proceedings

Work published before his time at Harvard was retracted after Emory found that essential data could not be verified. A New England Journal of Medicine notice particularly identified notebooks containing only initials, highly improbable samples and collaborators or referring doctors who could not be identified.

May 1981–January 1982

1981–1982: Harvard delays reporting case and reviewing all his work for several months

No legal proceedings

After the May 1981 admission, Harvard and the laboratory initially treated the incident as potentially isolated. Science subsequently reported that little action had been taken for approximately six months until NIH questions about other inconsistencies prompted an investigation and wider disclosure.

May 1981: colleagues catch him backdating experimental dog recordings; immediately admits falsification

No legal proceedings

Colleagues saw Darsee adding labels to recordings obtained minutes apart to make them appear to represent days or weeks of experimentation. When confronted, he admitted fabricating the data.

No documented link with another published profile for now.

Two profiles are linked when a documented controversy of one names the other. The link points to that controversy and its sources; it does not indicate a personal relationship.
