Maurice Papon

French senior official and former minister (1910–2007), convicted of complicity in crimes against humanity.

Maurice Papon was definitively convicted in 2004 of complicity in crimes against humanity over deportations of Jews from Gironde in 1942–44. His leadership of the Paris police during the violent repression of 17 October 1961 and the Charonne deaths in 1962 has also been heavily criticised, without a personal criminal conviction for those episodes. Later legal disputes concerned compensation and his wearing of the Legion of Honour.
