2014–2015: Major controversy over reduction of suspension in exchange for cooperation

No legal proceedings

The reduction of Gay's sanction to one year prompted strong criticism within athletics, notably from Usain Bolt, who considered that the cooperation mechanism sent the wrong message and created a significant inconsistency with other cases.

2014: One-year USADA suspension, results annulled from July 2012 and Olympic medal returned

Civil / administrative proceedings

Gay accepted a one-year suspension beginning on 23 June 2013 and the disqualification of his results from 15 July 2012, the date identified as the first use of the prohibited substance. He returned his silver medal from the London 2012 Olympic relay. The sanction, shorter than the standard two-year penalty at the time, was reduced because of his substantial cooperation with USADA.
