I. Documented controversies

01

1995–2001

1995: positive trial of high-dose chemotherapy for metastatic breast cancer published, subsequently invalidated

Civil / administrative proceedings

In 1995, Bezwoda published a randomised trial reporting a major benefit from high-dose chemotherapy. A subsequent audit located only 61 records for the 90 reported patients; only 27 were sufficiently documented to verify eligibility, and 18 of those 27 did not meet the published criteria.

2000–2001

2000–2001: case for high-dose chemotherapy in breast cancer collapses and ASCO issues warnings

No legal proceedings

Following the invalidation of Bezwoda's research and publication of other negative trials, ASCO warned that women should receive this type of high-dose chemotherapy only in high-quality clinical trials. The fraudulent studies had been among the few favourable randomised sources supporting the strategy.

May 1999–February 2000

1999: ASCO presentation of second trial claiming survival benefit, contradicting other randomised trials

No legal proceedings

At ASCO 1999, Bezwoda presented a high-dose chemotherapy trial in high-risk patients that was the only major trial presented to show a clear survival advantage. An international team visited the site before beginning a confirmatory study.

February 2000: international audit — missing consent forms and ethical approval, followed by admission of misconduct

No legal proceedings

Auditors found neither signed consent forms nor evidence of research committee approval for the reported trial. Bezwoda subsequently admitted scientific misconduct concerning the presentation of the control group's treatment.

March 2000: Wits finds disciplinary misconduct and dismisses him; investigation reports over 100 women treated without formal consent

Civil / administrative proceedings

The University of the Witwatersrand dismissed Bezwoda following a disciplinary hearing that found misrepresentation of results and absence of required ethical approval. The university apologised to patients; the press reported that more than one hundred disadvantaged Black women had been included without formal consent.

April 2000: allegation of backdated or forged approval letter, but provincial proceedings fail

Civil / administrative proceedings

During the crisis, a further allegation emerged that Bezwoda had forged and backdated a pharmacy and therapeutics committee letter to create the appearance of approval for his trial. The provincial government's disciplinary proceedings ultimately did not take place after administrative delays.

  1. May–June 2001

2001: second audit confirms unverifiable data and nine other studies falsely claiming ethical approval

An extensive audit of Bezwoda's research concluded that publications from the first trial did not report verifiable data. It also found that nine other trials co-authored by Bezwoda falsely claimed to have been reviewed or approved by the relevant institutional committee.

III. Constellation of documented links

No documented link with another published profile for now.

Two profiles are linked when a documented controversy of one names the other. The link points to that controversy and its sources; it does not indicate a personal relationship.
