Intervention against Jean-Marie Messier and informal influence over Vivendi

No legal proceedings

In 2002, Bébéar alerted directors to Vivendi Universal's situation and played a role in the movement that led to Jean-Marie Messier's departure. Following his removal, Jean-René Fourtou, a close associate of Bébéar, became chairman; executives and observers subsequently described Bébéar's considerable behind-the-scenes influence over Vivendi and other groups.

AXA management described as 'democratorship' and executive departures

No legal proceedings

Claude Bébéar advocated a management method at AXA that he called 'démocrature': extensive discussion beforehand, followed by an obligation to implement the decision. During reorganisations, several executives left the group and the press described an iron-fisted approach and governance sometimes considered almost monarchical.

BNP–Société Générale–Paribas banking battle: Influence of AXA and Bébéar

No legal proceedings

Bébéar played an important role in the 1999 banking battle by lending AXA's weight to BNP's bid against Société Générale and Paribas. His influence, while AXA held significant positions in French finance, fuelled criticism of the informal power of a small number of leading business executives.

No legal proceedings

The takeover of UAP was publicly presented as a 'merger of equals', but the initial executive committee comprised nine members from AXA and six from UAP, and the UAP brand was eventually due to disappear.
