Hicham Mandari

Former associate of Hassan II’s royal court, born around 1972 and murdered in Spain in August 2004.

Hicham Mandari was formerly associated with the Moroccan royal court and later publicly challenged the monarchy. He faced French criminal charges in counterfeit Bahraini dinar and alleged extortion cases, denied wrongdoing, and was murdered in Spain in 2004 before any known final criminal ruling. Spanish police reported identifying a suspect in 2006, but the reviewed sources do not establish a final conviction in the murder case.

  1. August 2004–March 2006

2004–2006: murdered in Fuengirola; Spanish investigation rules out a political motive

Hicham Mandari, prosecuted for currency trafficking in the United States and France and who sometimes claimed to be a son of Hassan II, was shot dead in August 2004 in Fuengirola, near Malaga. According to Jeune Afrique (March 2006), the investigation concluded it was a criminal killing linked to his burglaries of luxury-hotel safes with an accomplice, whom he allegedly tried to pay in counterfeit dollars, not a political assassination. Some media had presented him as a 'special adviser' to Hassan II and as an exiled opponent.
