2007–2026: Birnbacher affair, excessive fee and alleged party financing; civil settlements with heirs

Conviction — against a third party

Protagonist not prosecuted — these proceedings are not counted in their formal charges or convictions.

A six-million-euro fee paid to adviser Dietrich Birnbacher for the Hypo sale was found to be far above appropriate remuneration. Birnbacher stated that part was intended for the parties of Haider and Josef Martinz. Birnbacher and Martinz were convicted; civil proceedings subsequently targeted Haider's estate, and a settlement with his heirs was announced in 2026.
