Posthumous controversy over 'Nevermind' cover and Elden proceedings

Civil / administrative proceedings

The cover of "Nevermind", created during Cobain's lifetime, became the subject of a civil lawsuit brought by Spencer Elden alleging child sexual exploitation. After the Ninth Circuit remanded the case in 2023 on limitation grounds, the district court ruled in 2025 that the image was not sexually explicit; an appeal remained pending in 2026.
