Claim that Covid-19 vaccines encourage emergence of dangerous variants

No legal proceedings

Montagnier maintained that mass vaccination would exert selection pressure directly causing variants to emerge and worsening the epidemic. His remarks were widely circulated by networks spreading vaccine misinformation.

2020

Claim that SARS-CoV-2 was artificially engineered using elements of HIV

No legal proceedings

At the beginning of the pandemic, Montagnier claimed that SARS-CoV-2 had been manipulated in a laboratory and that sequences resembling HIV provided evidence of artificial engineering. Virologists and bioinformaticians rejected his reasoning because the cited sequences were too short and non-specific.

Statements opposing expansion of compulsory vaccination in France and public repudiation by 106 academics

No legal proceedings

During the French debate over expanding mandatory vaccinations, Montagnier made alarmist statements about vaccination alongside Henri Joyeux. More than one hundred members of the Academies of Sciences and Medicine publicly repudiated him, considering it dangerous for him to use his Nobel Prize prestige to spread claims they regarded as unfounded.

Support for “water memory” and research into electromagnetic signals attributed to diluted DNA

No legal proceedings

Montagnier maintained that highly diluted solutions containing microbial DNA could emit detectable electromagnetic signals, extending the highly controversial concept of “water memory”. This work is widely regarded as unsubstantiated and incompatible with the available evidence.

Infectious hypothesis of autism and proposal to use antibiotics

No legal proceedings

Montagnier proposed that chronic infection might play a major role in autism and suggested antibiotics as a possible treatment. Specialists cited at the time emphasised the absence of an established basis for treating autism as an infectious disease amenable to such treatment.

Statements downplaying HIV's direct role in some African contexts in favour of nutritional and oxidative factors

No legal proceedings

In his later statements, Montagnier strongly emphasised nutrition, oxidative stress and coexisting infections in AIDS progression, going so far as to suggest that improved nutrition would substantially reduce the problem in Africa.

Promotion of fermented papaya as possible treatment for neurodegenerative diseases

No legal proceedings

Montagnier became associated with promoting fermented papaya preparations and suggested this approach in the context of John Paul II's Parkinson's disease, an episode frequently cited as marking his progressive departure from the biomedical consensus.

Montagnier–Gallo dispute over HIV discovery and diagnostic test patents

Civil / administrative proceedings

After the LAV retrovirus was isolated by the Institut Pasteur team led by Luc Montagnier, Robert Gallo's American team isolated a virus named HTLV-III, which proved identical. A prolonged scientific, institutional and financial dispute arose over priority of discovery and royalties from the diagnostic test.
