December 2022–2023: Trial begins; Oliver Bellenhaus pleads guilty and implicates Braun, who disputes his account

Formally charged

The trial opened in Munich in December 2022. Oliver Bellenhaus, Wirecard's former Dubai executive and principal prosecution witness, acknowledged his own guilt and described Wirecard as an organised fraud with Braun at its centre. Braun's defence instead maintained that Bellenhaus and others orchestrated the embezzlement and prosecutors were pursuing the wrong man.
