2022–2023: remarks about Muslims in France, Grand Mosque announces complaint then withdraws after expressions of regret and rewriting

Allegations

In a conversation with Michel Onfray published by Front Populaire, Houellebecq spoke of future “Bataclans in reverse” and claimed that French people wanted Muslims to stop stealing and assaulting others or leave the country. The Grand Mosque of Paris announced a complaint for incitement to hatred. After meeting its rector, Houellebecq expressed regret, acknowledged making sweeping generalisations without nuance and agreed to rewrite the passages; the Mosque then abandoned the proceedings as matters stood.

2023: legal battle to prevent KIRAC 27 release; initial failure followed by right to advance viewing on appeal

Civil / administrative proceedings

After participating in filming for the erotic project KIRAC 27, Houellebecq sought to prevent the use of images which he considered infringed his and his wife's privacy. Dutch courts initially rejected his request to block the release. On appeal, the court ordered the director to provide him with the film four weeks before any release and delay distribution accordingly, but refused the general ban sought.

2021: strongly anti-euthanasia article argues civilisation legalising it loses right to respect

No legal proceedings

Houellebecq published an article in Le Figaro opposing euthanasia, arguing that a civilisation legalising it “loses all right to respect” and that its destruction then becomes legitimate or desirable. The absolute and violent wording fuelled a new controversy during France's end-of-life debates.

2018–2019: “Donald Trump Is a Good President” article and support for dissolution of European Union

No legal proceedings

In Harper's, Houellebecq published a deliberately provocative article entitled Donald Trump Is a Good President. While describing Trump as coarse, he praised, in particular, his retreat from international involvement and expressed a desire for the dissolution of the European Union, positions which provoked extensive commentary and criticism.

2015: Soumission triggers nationwide controversy over Islam, Islamophobia and political portrayal of France

No legal proceedings

Soumission imagines a France governed in 2022 by a president from a Muslim party. Its publication on the day of the Charlie Hebdo attack intensified an already heated debate: politicians and intellectuals accused the novel of exploiting fear of Islam. Houellebecq rejected the notion that a novelist must be “responsible” and acknowledged in an interview that he was probably Islamophobic in the sense of being “afraid” of Islam.

2010–2011: near-verbatim passages from Wikipedia in La Carte et le Territoire spark plagiarism and licensing controversy

No legal proceedings

Passages of La Carte et le Territoire reproduced Wikipedia entries almost word for word without initially identifying their source. The dispute concerned both literary plagiarism and compliance with the Creative Commons licence. Houellebecq acknowledged using existing texts as literary material and denied that the practice constituted plagiarism.

2010: Michel Lévy claims ownership of title La Carte et le Territoire and demands change

Civil / administrative proceedings

Writer Michel Lévy, who had self-published a collection bearing the same title in 1999, claimed ownership of La Carte et le Territoire and asked Flammarion to change the title of Houellebecq's novel. The publisher replied that the combination of common words was not sufficiently original to qualify for copyright protection.

2008: mother Lucie Ceccaldi publishes L’Innocente and publicly accuses him of falsifying family history

No legal proceedings

After being portrayed very negatively in autobiographical material associated with her son — and after Houellebecq had even described her as dead in an interview — Lucie Ceccaldi published L’Innocente. She responded to her son and publicly called him an impostor and parasite, triggering a fierce controversy over the autobiographical element and truthfulness of his family narrative.

2001–2002: describes Islam as “the stupidest religion”, tried for incitement to hatred and acquitted

Acquitted / conviction overturned

In an interview with Lire about Plateforme, Houellebecq made highly disparaging remarks about Islam and the Quran. Several Muslim and human rights organisations initiated proceedings for incitement to hatred or insult. The Paris court acquitted him in October 2002, ruling that the remarks targeted the religion rather than Muslims as a group and did not constitute incitement to discrimination.
