Mohammed Sayyid Tantaoui

Also known as: Muhammad Sayyid Tantawi, Mohamed Sayed Tantawy, محمد سيد طنطاوي, Mohammed Sayed Tantawi

Egyptian theologian (1928–2010), former Grand Mufti and Grand Imam of Al-Azhar from 1996 to 2010.

Mohammed Sayyid Tantawi led Al-Azhar from 1996 until his death in 2010. His positions on finance, veiling, female genital cutting and press freedom prompted differing reactions. A defamation suit he brought against two journalists led to fines in 2008; these were not convictions against Tantawi.
