Townshend was arrested under Operation Ore after admitting that he had used a credit card in 1999 to access a website offering child sexual abuse images. After four months, Metropolitan Police established that no such images had been downloaded or found in his possession, but he accepted a formal caution for accessing the site and was placed on the sex offenders register for five years.
