No legal proceedings

The Washington Post estimated that approximately 1.7 billion dollars in Church-related subsidies were invested in the newspaper during its first twenty years, despite chronic losses.

1970s–2000s: Recurring controversies over recruitment, community pressure and "deprogramming", with court decisions challenging coercion narrative

No legal proceedings

The Church's recruitment and communal living methods prompted decades of "brainwashing" allegations, family conflicts and interventions by deprogrammers. Several legal proceedings nevertheless showed that adult members stated they remained in the movement voluntarily, while families or deprogrammers sometimes failed to establish detention against their will.
